Health and Safety Executive’s (HSE) targeted inspection initiative is due to begin in September

This inspection initiative is just the most recent clampdown from the HSE, following a number of previous initiatives and enforcement operations that have been carried out this year.

The 2014/15 Plan of Work was released in April, and set out HSE’s focus for the year ahead. It publicised that over 70% of HSE inspection efforts are being targeted specifically at smaller sites, where most fatalities occur.

In the last week of June, HSE launched a two-week inspection drive that focused on finding the causes of ill health and disease. Inspectors turned up, unannounced and looked for health and safety breaches such as exposure to noise, vibration, dust and other hazardous substances such as cement, lead paint and dust.

HSE are stepping up their vigilance, particularly in this current busy climate. HSE chief construction inspector, Heather Bryant recently warned that rising workloads within construction had historically led to a rise in the number of injuries and fatalities. She warned that this, along with the current skills gap could escalate the likelihood of bad practice and poor understanding when it comes to health and safety.

Being prepared for an inspection could save you money, protect your reputation and eliminate stress – if you’re found in breach of the rules, there aren’t just fines to pay – Fees for Intervention will cost you and your site could even be shut down.
